This article outlines the work Rutgers Aging Brain & Health Alliance is doing. This is the lab where I serve as the Fitness/Wellness Research Coordinator.
Why Breathing Deeply is Ideal for Your Health
Breathing deeply, or slow breathing is an ancient exercise used to calm the body, slow heart rate, and bring peace to the mind. You can enjoy the benefits today by learning to breathe deeply through the diaphragm.

What People are Saying
As a gerontologist, I really appreciate your section on Age-Defying Living. It’s important to stress – especially as humans are are living longer – that there are a number of aging stereotypes that limit us (self-fulfilling prophecy!). We must unapologetically, without shame, embrace our true age, and not let any preconceived notions of that number limit how we live, love, move, breathe etc.
Finally, I truly enjoyed your vulnerability and encouragement throughout the book! I think your story, complete with setbacks, successes and everything in between, will encourage others to bring their own stories to light.
I just wanted to thank you for making exercise so much fun. Your enthusiasm and love of dance is evident with each class as you transport us around the world dancing with the people of the country you bring us to. You are a gem!
The program has taught me how to eat the meals I enjoy in moderation, love my body size and most importantly understand how vital daily exercise is to my life.
I now focus on walking, stretching, breathing and drinking more water and I owe this to the wellness program.
Lisa Charles is phenomenal and is always available for support. She makes me feel like I have my very own personal trainer. I love the wellness program and have recommended it to friends and neighbors in the community. I hope state or government resources continue to be available for invaluable initiatives like this community base fitness program. Lisa Charles is awesome and you can tell that she really cares about people and loves her work.
Thanks for your support Lisa!
Lisa’s commitment to me and all her trainees goes beyond the training session. She makes herself available to answer questions and she provides the utmost motivation. Lisa has helped me to change my life for the better, physically, mentally and emotionally. I am so grateful.
Lisa was such a motivator and really got us excited about the journey. The program has been a blessing to our church family.
